Energy storage is essential to supporting the growth of clean, renewable, and distributed energy, particularly as more and more states adopt ambitious clean energy goals. At the same time, interconnection procedures have not kept pace with the growing demand for DER interconnection, resulting in backlogged queues and unsupportable grid upgrade costs. Interconnection is a particular challenge for distributed energy storage, which can provide grid benefits through its flexible operating characteristics, but has unique complexities that require special consideration during interconnection.

This webinar on July 14, 2022 presented an introduction to distribution system interconnection, the predominant interconnection challenges that states are facing, and solutions to those challenges—with a particular focus on energy storage.
