In-Depth Training on Energy Storage-Related Interconnection StandardsThis training is the second in a two-part series on technical standards relevant to storage interconnection, and will explore in greater depth the recommendations that Chapter VIII of the BATRIES Toolkit offers for incorporating updated standards for energy storage in state interconnection procedures.
Many distributed energy resource interconnection rules today do not directly address energy storage or enable its unique capabilities. Energy storage—both standalone and paired with solar—has the ability to control power output, including the amount of electricity exported to the grid, and can provide valuable grid benefits. The complex control capabilities of storage and the lack of uniform best practices often present barriers to storage interconnection, resulting in a longer and more costly interconnection process. Establishing technical standards can help build trust and predictability in the operation of energy storage, and standards and equipment certification can provide acceptable control methods that reduce uncertainty in the interconnection process.
Participants in this training will learn:
how updated standards can be incorporated into interconnection rules, including technical requirements, processes and screens, application forms, and standard interconnection agreements;
how incorporation of those standards benefits the integration of energy storage into the distribution grid;
and details of key standards (IEEE 1547-2018, UL 1741 Certification Requirement Decision for Power Control Systems, IEEE C62.92.6).
This training is the second in a two-part series on technical standards relevant to storage interconnection, and will explore in greater depth the recommendations that Chapter VIII of the BATRIES Toolkit offers for incorporating updated standards for energy storage in state interconnection procedures. The first workshop, Let’s Get (Somewhat) Technical: An Introduction to Energy Storage-Related Interconnection Standards, provided a high-level overview of the standards and how they are important to the interconnection process.
This training is especially helpful for stakeholders who attended the first workshop or already have a good understanding of standards. It helps connect the dots between the standards and their applicability to interconnection rules and processes.
